How To Determine Your Wedding Budget

Updated: Feb 26, 2023

You’re planning a wedding! I’m sure you’ve heard how exciting yet stressful wedding planning can be. The biggest favor you can do for yourself is to set a realistic budget and then stick to it. This way, the only tears you will shed will be from seeing how lovely your partner looks on your wedding day.

The importance of setting a wedding budget cannot be overstated. A budget will help you determine what you can afford and give you a clear idea of what your wedding will look like. It will also help you avoid overspending and going into debt. If you’re buried in student loans, like me, then you probably don’t want to pile up the debt even more.

Planning your budget should be one of the first things you do. By setting a budget early on, you can make sure that you are allocating your funds wisely and not overspending in any one area. It will also help you make informed decisions about your wedding and avoid any last-minute financial surprises.

Assess Your Financial Situation

So, how do you determine your wedding budget? The first step is to assess your financial situation. Take a look at your total savings and disposable income. Consider any debts or outstanding financial obligations, such as student loans or credit card balances. If you or your partner's parents are contributing to the wedding, make sure to take this into account as well. It's important to be honest with yourself about your financial situation and set a realistic budget based on what you can afford.

Discuss Your Priorities

Once you have a good understanding of your financial situation, it's time to set your priorities. Decide on the most important aspects of your wedding and allocate a larger portion of your budget to these priorities. For some couples, the venue and catering might be the most important elements, while for others, it might be the dress or the flowers. Think about what matters most to you and allot your funds accordingly.

While setting your priorities, it's also a good idea to consider areas where you can cut costs to stay within budget. For example, you might consider having a smaller wedding or opting for a less expensive venue. You might also consider having a weekday wedding or getting married in the off-season to save money. There are many creative ways to cut costs and still have the wedding of your dreams.

Use a Budget Spreadsheet or Tracker to Manage Your Wedding Expenses

Once you have your budget and priorities determined, it's time to start managing your expenses. To stay on track, create a budget spreadsheet to track your expenses. Review your budget regularly to ensure you stay on track and make adjustments as needed. It's also a good idea to have a contingency fund in case of any unexpected expenses that may arise.

Research and compare prices for various vendors and services, such as photographers, florists, and caterers. It's also a good idea to consider alternative options, such as having a DIY wedding or opting for a less expensive venue. While most of us understand how costly weddings can be, it’s still shocking to see the prices for some of these vendors. Like in any good home renovation show (shout-out Property Brothers), you need a contingency fund to cover any unforeseen expenses.

Now Go Enjoy Planning!

It's essential to set and stick to a wedding budget to help ensure that your big day is everything you've dreamed of. By setting a budget and making informed decisions about your wedding, you can have a beautiful and memorable day without breaking the bank. (Or at least you can break the bank in a planned way that you carefully prepared for.)

This will be the best day of your life regardless of budget! Now you can enjoy the rest of the planning process!
